If you can't get or keep an erection that is firm enough for you to have sex, this is known as erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence. Most people have trouble getting an erection every now and again, and it becomes more common as you age, but you should still be able to get an erection to have sex most of the time. If you are having ED more often than you would like, there are treatments that can help! These can be used no matter what age you are.
Causes
ED may be caused by one or more of the following physical and mental health issues:
- Depression, stress and anxiety
- Decreased blood supply to the penis
- Nerve issues which prevent arousal signals from reaching the penis from the brain and spinal cord
- Excessive alcohol or smoking
- Medication side effects
- Health issues like low testosterone levels, diabetes, or high blood pressure.
- Complications of prostate surgery
- Peyronie disease - scar tissue inside penis that causes curved and painful erections
Symptoms
The only symptom of ED is being unable to get and keep an erection that is firm enough or lasts long enough to have sex. Even with ED, you may still have sexual desire and be able to have an orgasm and ejaculate.
