PrOD prescriptions are typically issued as a 60-tab supply. When you are taking PrEP On Demand, routine lab testing is required every three months, even if you do not need a refill. We follow Canadian prescribing guidelines, and this regular testing helps ensure that PrEP remains a safe medication for you.
You can learn more about the lab tests required here: What are the required lab tests for PrEP?
You will receive an email reminder from us when it is time to complete your routine lab testing. Initiating a refill on your dashboard will also generate your next lab requisition, ensuring your routine testing stays on schedule.
For patients taking On Demand, a refill may not be required with each testing cycle, as this depends on individual activity levels. However, the patient portal will still use the same wording and send email notifications each time a lab requisition is issued. We understand this can sometimes be a bit confusing, but rest assured that these reminders are standard for all patients and help ensure your care is consistent.
We'll break down each step within the renewal process below:
1. Self-assessment
Log into your Freddie account and complete the self-assessment on your dashboard. This will ask a few questions about your current health and treatment, which will be forwarded to Freddie’s clinical team for review. Please ensure that you answer “No” to the question “Since your last Freddie prescription, have you taken your PrEP every day without any missed doses”. You can also indicate if you are using On Demand dosing and whether you need a refill at this time.
If you have any persistent or bothersome side effects, you may be prompted to book an appointment with a clinician.
After completing the self-assessment, you'll also have the option to request DoxyPEP with your PrEP refill.
2. Go for lab testing
Once you’ve completed the self-assessment, a new lab requisition will be uploaded to your patient portal.
Some labs can take walk-in appointments, but some need to be booked in advance. This will vary depending on where you live; in some provinces, this wait could be two weeks or more. It’s a good idea to book an appointment as soon as your requisition is ready.
Most labs accept lab requisitions via email. You can use the 'Share' button in the patient portal to email your requisition directly to the lab, using the email address provided when you arrive at the lab.
3. Notify us of completed lab tests in the patient portal
After completing your lab tests, log back into the Freddie portal and fill out the lab feedback form on your dashboard. You can find this form in the dashboard section by clicking "I've gone to the lab". You can also navigate to the Lab requisitions tab on the left hand sidebar to enter your lab information.
The lab feedback form will ask you where and when you completed your lab tests. This information is helpful for our Support teams in the event we need to contact the lab you attended to obtain your results.
4. Clinicians Review your lab results and issue prescription refills (if requested)
If you have requested a refill:
Once you've completed lab feedback, our clinicians will send a new prescription to your preferred pharmacy within 48 hours. You will receive an email notifying you when your prescription has been sent to your preferred pharmacy. You can also view your prescription history by navigating to the 'Prescriptions' tab on the left-hand side of the patient portal.
We refill prescriptions while your test results are pending to make sure that your PrEP supply isn’t interrupted.
If you did not request a refill:
A PrEP prescription will not be issued. Your clinician will review your results as they come in from the lab.
On average, your results can take around 10 business days to process. We will only get in touch with you if there are any results to know about - no news is good news!
5. Collect your renewal prescription
Once the pharmacy has processed your prescription, they will contact you to arrange delivery or pickup details for your medication(s). If you do not hear from your pharmacy within 3 days of your prescription being issued, or if you are running low on medication, please contact the pharmacy directly.
💡 A quick reminder:
Routine lab testing is still required every three months when using PrEP On Demand, even if you do not need a refill at that time. This regular testing helps keep your care safe and up to date.
