If you’d like to stop taking PrEP, the first step is to notify Freddie's clinical team. Please log in to the Freddie patient portal and select the “Manage prescription” button on the dashboard. From there, you can select "Pause" or "Stop" depending on your treatment needs. You’ll then be guided through a set of questions with clinical recommendations for coming off of your medication safely.
Below is a quick video demo on how to pause or stop treatment in the Freddie patient portal:
When you stop taking PrEP, you will no longer be protected against HIV. It’s important to keep taking PrEP for a short while after the last time you had condom-less sex to have protection from that sexual encounter. This varies depending on your body parts and the kind of sex you’re having.
If you’re having anal sex, you should take PrEP for a minimum of two more days after the last time you had sex. If you have a vagina and are having vaginal sex, you should take PrEP for a minimum of seven more days and, ideally, 28 more days after the last time you had sex. This is because the science is still unclear on continued protection for vaginal sex.
If you wish to discuss coming off of PrEP with a Freddie clinician, please book a clinical appointment at a time that works best for you. You can do this by navigating to the "Clinical Appointments" tab in the Freddie patient portal.
